Teamfight Tactics: 5 Best Team Comps in Set 16

Which comps give you the best chance in TFT's latest massive expansion.

The most important thing in any game of TFT is to have a good team comp. No matter what items you have or how skilled you are at the game itself, if your team comp is bad, you don’t have a chance. In this article I’m going to look at what I consider to be the 5 best team comps for set 16!

Note: This article is focused on the best overall comps in general, without focusing too much on how the meta has shifted from patch to patch. While a trait might not be “the best” all the time due to balancing and patches, in general the strength of these comps isn’t reliant on the current meta. Also, the images below were made using the website tftactics.gg (which I also recommend for general TFT info).

Void Comp

  • Champions: Kog’Maw, Cho’Gath, Malzahar, Kai’Sa, Swain, Rift Herald, Bel’Veth, Volibear
  • Top Carries: Kai’Sai and Bel’Veth
  • Level-Up Strategy: Fast 8 (important for Kai’Sa/Bel’Veth)

The Void trait is really strong this season, mostly because of Rift Herald and the mutations. The mutations are essentially items that don’t take up an item slot which only Void units can use. Other than the mutations, you also get Rift Herald after a set number of rounds with the Void trait active. Rift Herald is a really strong troop that’s perfect for your tank items, and if you get him to 3-star he does a lot of damage too.

That being said, the top carries for this team are Kai’Sa and Bel’Veth. Just like in League itself, Kai’Sa can do either AP or AD damage. Her AP form is better in TFT, but either one can work in theory. But since Bel’Veth is the other carry and has to use AD, it’s better to split them that way. You can also put Bel’Veth’s items on Volibear once you unlock him at level 8, which is good if you’re not able to get her to at least 2-star.

This comp excels late game thanks to the strength of bruisers like Volibear and Rift Herald once they have some items and/or levels. In early- to mid-game, I recommend focusing on trying to utilize the strength of Kog’Maw early to start a win streak. This is also a comp that can handle being contested pretty well as long as you actually get the units you need. Since Rift Herald and Kai’Sa are unlocked in-game, you’re at least guaranteed one of each, so no worries there.

Yordle Arcanists

  • Champions: Rumble, Lulu, Poppy, Teemo, Kobuko & Yummi, Kennen, Fizz, Veigar
  • Top Carries: Veigar
  • Level-Up Strategy: Normal

For this one, it’s all about one unit–Veigar. Yordles are really strong in particular because they’re mostly low cost, meaning you can level them up quickly. You also don’t have to strategize much long term, since you never have to switch to a “late game comp” like most do. With Yordles, you can play them from the time you get them to the end of the game without much changing. If you want you could drop from Yordles 8 to 6 and grab some 5-cost champions, but at that point it’d be better go to level 9 or even 10.

The only carry this team comp needs, really, is Veigar. The only problem is that to unlock Veigar you have to have a troop with two Rabadon Deathcaps equipped. That means that this comp is dependent on some element of luck since there’s no way to guarantee 4 Needlessly Large Rods. However, between augments and the carousel you can improve your chances a lot. If you don’t get there, though, this comp does fall apart and you’ll need to pivot out of it.

Sion Caretaker

  • Champions: Illaoi, Shen, Bard, Aphelios, Sion, Kobuko & Yummi, Wukong, Volibear
  • Top Carries: Bard and Aphelios
  • Level-Up Strategy: Re-roll at level 6 until 3-star Sion and Bard

This comp is a personal favorite of mine this season. Sion is strong since he scales throughout the game and gains health each time he scores a takedown. It’s also a comp that mostly relies on cheaper units, so you can stay at level 6 and roll as much as you want. Getting 3-star Sion is extremely important since he gains more health per takedown at that point, so he snowballs better the earlier you get 3-star. Due to this, it’s essential to have a carry that’s also cheap to level up at the same time. Bard fits that roll perfectly while also giving you free champions with the Caretaker ability.

Bruisers are always good in TFT, as more HP is never bad. This is the best version of Bruiser-forward comp we have in set 16, with Sion as the true tank and Bard and Aphelios (and later Volibear) to handle the damage. Sion eventually becomes so tanky that even the best high-cost comps struggle to deal with him, so it’d be impossible not to recommend it.

Shadow Isles Comp

  • Champions: Yorick, Gwen, Loris, Kalista, Braum, Serraphine, Fiddlesticks, Thresh
  • Top Carries: Kalista and Fiddlesticks
  • Level-Up Strategy: Fast 8 (important for Kalista and 5-star champions)

Shadow Isles is one of the easiest strategies to go for since you unlock each Shadow Isle champion as you use the other ones. To start out with, you have to get Viego to 2-star and equip items on him to unlock Yorick. Then once you have the Shadow Isles trait active, you’ll begin to unlock the other ones as you collect souls (which is done by using Shadow Isles units). You don’t have to worry about luck as much later, but getting the 2-star Viego early is 100% required.

You’ll want to get to level 8 ASAP with this comp so you have the best chance possible to get 5-star troops. Thresh is guaranteed via Shadow Isle unlock, but Fiddlesticks will require some luck. Braum and Serraphine are also 4-cost units, so level 8 is also important for them. Once you have the units you need, the most important thing is to focus on leveling up Kalista and trying to get 2-star 5-cost champions.

Demacian Arcanists

  • Champions: Sona, Jarvan IV, Xin Zhao, Poppy, Swain, Lux, Garen, Zilean (with Galio on the bench)
  • Top Carries: Lux
  • Level-Up Strategy: Fast 8 (important for Lux and Garen)

This comp is really strong since it technically gets a free unit. Galio doesn’t actually get placed on your board, since his ability makes him jump onto it from the bench. But he still counts for your trait count, so you don’t have to worry about compensating for him. Demacians are quite strong individually, and they have some of the best 4-cost champions in the game right now. Lux’s AP damage is absolutely insane, and Garen is one of the best tanks in the game. That alone is reason to use them, and it makes getting to level 8 ASAP even more important.

This is a team comp that really benefits from long term augments and strategies. Once you have the full board together, Lux and Garen are more than enough to carry you into the late game stages. If you can get to level 10, you have some really great options with 5-cost champions. Gold/income augments are also pretty strong with this comp since you should have enough time to stabilize your board to make it long enough to get maximum bonuses. You could even take something like the Golden Egg with this comp and make it work.
